Dear donors,
It is with great joy, but also slightly with some nostalgia that I am informing you that we have reached our funding target in this project. This will be our final report for you regarding this funding project.
All in all, we have been able to educate, empower and engage hundreds of girls in our community in the Mathare slums in the past years.
Many have gone to secondary school, even to university or vocational training. Whatever ensures them a perspective on a life outside the slums. Being able to find a job, earn their own money, live in a self assured way and take the decisions that are right for them.
Take Sharon who graduated only last week from nursing school. The first nurse at Safe Spaces. It makes us extremely proud that she has been able to complete her study, by being supported by - amonst others - our donors on GlobalGiving.
In the past quarter the girls have been studying a lot in our digital library, where they continued to follow their online classes. It has remained a challenge with long lockdowns where the girls were not able to go to school. We tried as much as we could to get them at Safe Spaces, guide them with their homework, coaching them with the tensions at home as their parents have difficulty finding a day job.
The girls have showed so much stamina and humour (we laugh a lot at Safe Spaces) to overcome the challenges in covid times. We are very proud that very few people in our community were infected by covid. We have been very vigilent, handing out all protection materials such as masks and sanitizers to make sure people could protect themselves. The girls were instructed all the time on how to use this and help others in the community to understand the necessity of it. It has worked out very well.
