At Saffron Kitchen Project (SKP) our mission is to support displaced people in building healthy, autonomous lives, using food as a toolkit. We are a community that leverages food so people can eat, cook, learn and most importantly, feel that they belong. We are a registered NGO that creates high quality, nutritious meals for vulnerable communities in Athens, offers free accredited Culinary Training in partnership with Greek school IEK Delta, and employs chefs from the refugee community.
In 2019 Greece was fifth in Europe for food insecurity among its citizens. More specifically 40% of people living in refugee camps in 2022 were denied food after the decision of the government to discontinue access to those who had not initiated the asylum procedure. Furthermore, cash assistance and housing programmes that supported the refugee population, have stopped or reduced operations in 2022, which led to more displaced people in Athens facing food insecurity and lack of financial means
Our solution is to provide vulnerable people both from the refugee and local community with nutritious and flavoursome meals in a sustainable way. We distribute throughout Athens, avoiding food waste as much as possible. Our team of chefs are hired directly from the refugee community on Greek contracts giving opportunity, intergration & financial security. We offer free accreditd Culinary Vocation Training to refugees & migrants, as well as getting them job ready to enter the hospitality sector
Our meals combat food insecurity in Athens, easing stress and improving well-being. A secure meal allows people to focus on rebuilding their lives. Accredited Culinary Training equips them for hospitality jobs, fostering self-reliance. Hiring from the refugee community offers access to fair and legal work opportunities, experience working in a European setting and integration within Greek society.
