Encouraging Social Engagement

Last month, Salem Social Village was privileged to host and facilitate another key conference bringing together social entrepreneurs, activists and young leaders in the charitable sector across Central Asia.

ZhasCamp, which effectively translates from Kazakh as 'Youth Conference', is an event dedicated to inspiring social initiatives among the younger generation.

It gives those actively contributing to a constructive and open civil society in many different spheres, including politics, responsible business, media and art, the chance to connect with one another and hear what's going on in other parts of the region.

Although primarily organised by Kazakhstan-based organisations, this year the event brought together young people from across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Experts and guests from all three countries talked about important aspects of engaging in social initiatives. Questions they addressed included things like how to know when is the right time to move into a new sector, how to start your own project, or how to make your business socially responsible.

Other topics included how media and art help the development of society, and how to help the youth of Central Asia find synergy and partnership in these spheres.

In total, 140 people, including delegates, the organising team, and the various speakers, attended ZhasCamp 2024 over the two days. Such a significant event would often be held in Almaty, or a capital city in the region, so it was great to provide the space for this great event once more, for the third time following the previous events here in 2015 and 2017.

What a privilege to again enable further growth that has an impact way beyond just Shymkent.
