At Joy for Children Uganda, we continue to witness the challenges young girls face around menstruation. Many of them feel ashamed to speak about their periods, primarily because of stigma and period shaming by boys and peers. This silence leaves girls isolated and unsure of how to manage their menstrual health.
Tragically, some girls, when experiencing pain or discomfort during their periods, are misled into believing that sexual activity is a “cure.” This misinformation puts them at risk, both physically and emotionally.
To address this, Joy for Children Uganda has implemented comprehensive educational programs targeting both girls and boys. We provide girls with accurate information about menstruation, teaching them how to manage their periods safely and with dignity. Simultaneously, we educate boys about menstruation to encourage respect, empathy, and understanding, helping to reduce stigma and prevent harmful myths from taking root.
Through these initiatives, we are empowering young girls to confidently manage their menstrual health, while also promoting a supportive environment where boys become allies rather than sources of shame. This work is crucial in protecting girls’ health, rights, and overall well-being.
We are grateful for your continued support, which allows us to reach more children and create safer, healthier communities.
