Save the Gili Turtles & Help to Build a Hatchery

How are we getting on?

We can't believe, with only 8 days left, we've hit 50% of our goal!! We are so close (and so unbelievably excited!) and we're so grateful for the help and support you have given to us so far.

What are we trying to do?

Our aim to build an ethical and non-invasive turtle hatchery is quite unusual in Indonesia! There are countless turtle hatchery programs using a method called Headstarting where hatchlings are kept in tanks for up to 18 months before being released into the ocean. The biggest problem (amongst many) noted with these methods is that baby turtles lose critical lung development when kept in shallow tanks, meaning they can't free-dive for food and to rest. This causes the baby turtle to die soon after being released. We made a short docu to gently educate without pointing any blame here.

We want to ensure every turtle born on Gili T has the best start to life! By offering a safe, sandy nursery to incubate eggs before an immediate release to the ocean.

We will be supporting the very poachers that have stolen eggs in the past, to be recruited as Turtle Rangers, to locate and transport eggs to the nursery, creating a sustainable income for them and their families throughout these difficult times.

How your donation will help

With your donation, we can start to build an enclosed area to safely incubate clutches of eggs and encourage members of the community to receive training in proper relocation techniques to empower them with a stable income whilst ensuring the future generations of turtles born on Gili T have the best possible start to their already challenging life.
