Dear Gili Turtle Advocates,
As we reflect on the conclusion of this year's turtle nesting season on Gili Trawangan, we are excited to share the latest updates on our ongoing efforts to protect these incredible creatures. Despite the challenges posed by the absence of rains and shifting nesting patterns, our collective commitment to conservation remains unwavering.
Post-Nesting Season Observations:
Turtle season may be over, but our vigilance continues. Volunteers persisted in collecting valuable data through daily sunrise surveys. Interestingly, reports suggest an increase in nighttime beach activities, many new beach clubs opening directly in front of one of the nesting hotspots, reinforcing the need for heightened awareness and adherence to proper protocols. The Project Penyu team, called out 11 times for assistance from May through September, showcases the dedication required to protect these endangered creatures.
Project Penyu's Tireless Efforts:
A heartfelt salute to Project Penyu, a passionate local team of Gili Islander women dedicated to raising awareness and implementing protection measures along the coasts of Gili Trawangan. In 2022, they spent their time crafting learning materials, conducting workshops, and repairing neglected nest cages due to increased poaching risks during the pandemic. Despite their full-time jobs or study, these remarkable individuals actively engage with businesses along the coastline, providing essential workshops on turtle conservation. They navigate the delicate balance between protecting turtles and managing tourism, ensuring that beach bars minimize lights and noise to safeguard the nesting sites.
National Children’s Day Celebration:
Last week, we celebrated National Children's Day with a special workshop at Ombak Sunset Hotel, inviting primary school kids to join Project Penyu in learning about turtle conservation. The event included a fun beach clean game and a flower-planting activity, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship among the young participants.
Informal Workshops and Community Engagement:
Project Penyu's commitment extends beyond the nesting season. In the absence of hatching events, they continue to engage tourists through informal workshops, educating them on the turtle life cycle and the importance of prompt and natural entry into the water. This approach not only protects the turtles but also creates a community of informed stewards for these nesting creatures.
Looking Ahead:
With the nesting season concluded, Project Penyu is gearing up to review workshop materials and gather feedback from businesses. The focus is on refining their educational initiatives to make workshops even more memorable and impactful. Fundraising efforts will persist, supporting ongoing awareness campaigns and education initiatives, with a particular emphasis on reaching schools and creating materials in Indonesian for children.
Conclusion:
As we navigate the post-nesting season landscape, your continued support fuels our dedication to turtle conservation. Together, we are building a future where these magnificent creatures thrive, and every individual, young or old, plays a role in their protection.
Thank you for being a crucial part of this incredible journey with your loyalty and generous donations and support.
