Protect Hippos from Anthrax in Virunga

By AGIZO | Coordinator

Project Summary

In Virunga National Park, over 50 hippopotamuses have been found dead, poisoned by anthrax in the waters of Lake Edward. This unprecedented ecological crisis poses a severe threat to wildlife, local communities, and public health. The "Save Hippopotamuses from Anthrax" project aims to contain the outbreak, protect the ecosystem, and raise community awareness about anthrax-related health risks.

Project Objectives

  1. Stop the spread of anthrax by urgently removing infected carcasses.
  2. Protect local biodiversity, including endangered species.
  3. Inform and educate surrounding communities on the health risks.
  4. Discourage the consumption of contaminated bushmeat.
  5. Strengthen local capacity to respond to environmental health crises.

Background and Urgency

Virunga is home to incredible biodiversity, but also faces ongoing instability. This anthrax outbreak poses a deadly threat not only to animals and water sources, but to thousands of people living around the park. Human transmission is a real danger. Without swift action, the health and environmental consequences could be devastating.

Key Actions Underway

  • Safe removal and burial of deceased hippos.
  • Community awareness campaigns in partnership with local stakeholders.
  • Distribution of protective equipment for field agents.
  • Education efforts on contamination risks and prevention practices.

Partnership with GlobalGiving

Through our partnership with GlobalGiving, we are using a trusted platform to raise international support and ensure full transparency in how resources are used. This collaboration strengthens our ability to respond effectively, provide regular donor updates, and secure long-term impact.

Project Budget

  • Estimated Total Budget: $150,000
This includes: emergency response, health safety, local training, logistics, protective gear, secure burials, and awareness campaigns.

Funding Status

Currently, no funds have been raised yet. This critical lack of resources is hindering our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to the crisis.
