Update on Manambaro Lycee project

By Gillian Whitworth | Administration and Communications Assistant

After 3 months on GlobalGiving, the Manambaro Lycee project has raised an amazing $2419, thanks to the generosity of our donors. We cannot stress how important this money will be to the project: so far we have enough for 20 sheets of aluminium roofing, 35 benches and desks, and 36 bags of cement. These materials will help ensure that the school can provide adequate learning spaces for the students that are safe, sheltered and sustainable all year round.

However, we still need to raise an additional $30,877 to achieve our aim of building two school buildings, a well and a latrine, which Manambaro Lycee desperately needs. The school currently has to turn away more than 500 students per year due to insufficient space: this is especially problematic in the impoverished Anosy region where education is central to improving career and life prospects. In addition, current students have to drink from a pool and defecate in the open. With your help, we aim to provide adequate sanitation facilities that will reduce the number of days students have to take off for illnesses such as diarrhoea.

In the long-term, the proposed construction will benefit 2,500 high school students in the next decade and over 12,500 members of their households. Clearly, this money will be invaluable to alleviating poverty in the region.

Therefore, we ask you to spread the word about Manambaro, and continue to donate to ensure that we start construction as planned in January. It costs just $12 for one bag of cement to render the walls of the classrooms, so that it is functional all year round; $95 will paint the interior walls of one classroom. As you can see, this money will allow more children to attend school in the community that Manambaro Lycee serves and help drive development across the south of Anosy.
