Construction work on classroom 1 begins !

After the successful construction of the well and latrine, construction work is now well under way on the new school. Thank you all so much for your support!!

The well is now fully kitted out with a fence, built by members of the local community on the well management committee. Not only is the well supplying clean water to the school’s children and staff, it is also relieving the pressure on the well in the town.

The latrines are now being used regularly by students and staff at the school. Further, Azafady’s team have scheduled in WASH sessions with the headmistress of the school. This is expected to lead to a higher standard of health among the students. By missing fewer lessons through diarrheal diseases, students should be able to have more productive learning experiences.

Since the traditional groundbreaking ceremony for the new school building, the local community has helped to clear the land and help source some building materials locally. International volunteers, our permanent construction team and construction workers from Manambaro have brought the building along a great deal.

The foundations have been laid, the reinforced concrete pillars are up and the brickwork is now well above window level. The foundations for the floor have been put down, the reinforcing concrete belt has been installed above the windows and work has even begun on the landscaping around the school.

We expect the roof to be put down any day now and rendering on the walls should be completed too. In January the floor will be completed, the door will be fitted and the building will also be painted. By the end of February, the benches will have been built and the building will have been furnished; hopefully putting the project a month ahead of schedule.

When this stage of the project is completed, one hundred extra students will be able to study at the Lycee every year. This is a really important step in allowing them to access high quality jobs. We could really do with more of your support to get these other three buildings up too. Just think, in 10 years time, the Manambaro project will have given 4000 children the chance to complete high school. Keep supporting us please!!!
