Sarah is one of the international volunteers who came to offer her support to the construction of the second school building at the Manambaro Lycée throughout March 2017. Sarah has always wanted to see Madagascar – and not just because of the movie! Having volunteered abroad many times before in places like Kenya and Ghana, she much prefers being active when visiting a new country. This is why she has particularly enjoyed working as a short-term volunteer on the construction of the school building for Project Sekoly in Manambaro.
Sarah loves working on site and being able to get to know the construction team despite knowing little of the Malagasy language. While she found her very first day in Madagascar a bit startling, she is glad that she got out of her comfort zone and is particularly thrilled to be “able to see first-hand the impact that you’re making here” – and even confessed that her favourite part of the construction has been mixing cement.
SEED’s ‘Pioneer’ volunteering scheme offers the opportunity to people like Sarah to discover Malagasy culture, environment and people whilst adding an extra pair of helping hands to the local community on projects such as Project Sekoly.
Construction updates
The construction of the second school building has greatly progressed thanks to the efforts provided by SEED’s construction team and the group of international volunteers who came to help us. Together, they have worked on the rendering of the floors inside the classrooms, painting the walls, building window sills and installing the latrine doors.
The remainder of the work needed on the second school building will take no more than two weeks, and will be pursued in July as soon as a new group of international volunteers arrive. The remaining construction activities will include finishing up the concrete cupboards and shelves, giving another fresh coat of paint to the walls, painting the roof, and closing the latrine door vault. Once the second set of classrooms has been built, the construction team and the international volunteers will be able to start the work on the third and final school building of Project Sekoly at Manambaro Lycée.
