Project Report | Dec 12, 2025
Nigeria's last zoo elephant

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear respected donors,

Thank you for your support toward saving Nigeria’s last zoo elephant at Jos Wildlife Park. The funds received so far are appreciated, though still not enough to begin full intervention. Your early contribution helps draw attention to the urgent condition of this endangered animal.

The elephant is currently facing severe risks due to poor nutrition, lack of regular veterinary care, and an aging enclosure that no longer meets its basic needs. These gaps have led to weight loss, weakened immunity, and visible decline. Without timely care, Nigeria could lose its last zoo elephant, a loss that carries emotional, ecological, and educational consequences. With fewer than 400 wild elephants remaining nationwide, the death of this individual would further erode the country’s wildlife heritage.

Our project aims to reverse this decline by supplying a balanced diet, clean water, routine medical examinations, and treatment. Enrichment activities such as improved feeding structures, exercise space, and sensory stimulation will help restore both physical and mental well-being. The plan also includes repairs to the enclosure to create a safe, cleaner, and more comfortable environment. Trained wildlife handlers will monitor the elephant daily and adjust care as needed.

Once fully funded, this intervention will help the elephant regain strength and live in healthier conditions for many years. Its survival will continue to educate thousands of visitors about wildlife protection and inspire interest in conserving Nigeria’s remaining wild elephant population. For children and young people, seeing a healthy elephant can spark lifelong interest in conservation and respect for natural heritage.

We remain grateful for your help. Every contribution brings us closer to saving a national symbol and preserving an irreplaceable piece of Nigeria’s wildlife history.

Warm regards,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
