Project Report | Mar 17, 2026
Big things are underway in Lilungu

By Jennifer Moustgaard | Program Manager

Our DRC Chief of Operations, Bienvenu Mupenda, has launched a multi-part mission to move our work forward. He has already met with regional authorities to share our plans, and he is now traveling by motorcycle along the Tshuapa River to our field site with a new researcher joining the Bonobo Diversity (BonDiv) project.

When Bienvenu arrives, he will be working side by side with our local partner, the Association for the Protection of the Bonobos of Lilungu (APBL), to strengthen outreach and prepare for broad community consultations. These consultations will be done together with our partners at the Congo Biotropical Institute and Wild Forests and Fauna. We’ve got a great team! This is the critical next step toward legally protecting community forests, and will help shape what comes next in conservation planning in the area.

And we are not showing up empty-handed. Essential gear is on the way for our bonobo trackers, including headlamps, ponchos, batteries, and more. With Lilungu (and our other sites) so remote, resupplying is not as simple as a quick trip to the store.

We are also transporting materials to help complete the conservation center the community has been building. This center will become a hub for bonobo monitoring and other programs as they grow, bringing stronger infrastructure and coordination to the work on the ground.

None of this would be possible without the leadership of local communities, the trusted partnerships BCI has built, and the steady support of generous donors like you.

As always, thank you for standing with us.
