Dear Supporter,
Both of our teams in Mexico have recently been fundraising for our childcare partners in Playa del Carmen. They have managed to raise money for 6 months worth of dog therapy at the Integral Care Centre plus more!
The care centre is home to children with a wide range of disabilities, both mental and physical. The therapy that is provided to the children is of utmost importance to their development and quality of life. Some of the therapeutic activities that are undertaken at the school include equine, aqua and dog therapy. The dog therapy has proved, in the past, to be a major success and we are so happy that we have raised enough money to be able to re-start this activity and see it running for the next 6 months.
So how did we raise the money?
The team in Playa del Carmen took part in a 42.6km cycle from the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve through to the town of Punta Allen in the reserve itself. That might not sound too bad, but when you combine it with the fact that they undertook the ride during the hottest month of the year in Mexico. And consider that the entire route took the team over uneven roads and terrain, then you will begin to understand that it definitely wasn’t for the faint of heart!
Over in Pez Maya, the team participated in the Xplor Bravest Race. The Bravest race is an extraordinary race, a challenge of endurance, power, and physical skill. It also tests your mental and spiritual will. It is a journey over 5km littered with 30 obstacles including human ones, known as the Brave Hunters! The course took the team through dense jungle, into underground rivers, caves and cenotes all the while being chased by the Brave Hunters. It really tested the teamwork, strength and endurance of the Pez Maya guys.
The bulk of the money that was raised will go towards the dog therapy program. Surplus funds will be allocated based on the needs of the center as well as Mexico’s other child care partner, Save the Children. Needs change but can include anything from buying educational materials, buying medical equipment, sponsoring training or therapy sessions to buying drinking water.
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved with setting the challenges up, the staff and volunteers who participated in the challenges and everyone who donated and supported from near and far. Projects like this never run in isolation, and the successful running of them wouldn’t be possible without participation from all stakeholders. Thank you!
With Gratitude,
GVI-Mexico
