A new addition to the Tortoise enclosure is causing a stir!
An injured female Negev Desert Tortoise was brought into the Zoo clinic suffering from a broken carapace (the top or dorsal shell).
The Zoo vets fixed the crack and after healing, she was introduced to the enclosure.
Up until now, the enclosure contained six males and two females and thus the appearance of a new young female was welcomed enthusiastically by the males.
We are now looking forward to see the results of this enthusiasm and hoping for some new additions in the coming months.
This past season concluded with three baby tortoises hatching and two surviving.
They are currently maturing behind the scenes in the Small Animal House at the Zoo.
Have a safe winter,
The Tortoise Team
