Dear Desert Tortoise Supporters,
Our desert tortoise breeding core continues to thrive at the Zoo – however we have no new breeding activity to report.
This project is not only about breeding the species to potentially reintroduce individuals into the wild. The project is also critical to acquiring accurate data which is needed for species management and conservation measures. Population growth within breeding centers, the establishment of new nature reserves in the sands of northwestern Negev in conjunction with effective management, as well as community education and awareness of known threat factors would all enhance the survival prospects of the species.
We are proud that our team have been involved in important monitoring activities as well as genetic research to help this, the tiniest species of tortoise.
