Abdul was just 10 years old when our team found him wandering around Ghaziabad station alone in January. It was clear that he was distressed and he was looking for someone to help him get home so we took him to the safety of our child help desk to calm and reassure him. Abdul admitted that he had bunked off school as he was fascinated by trains so wanted to come to the station. But after a while he realised he didn’t like being alone and didn’t feel safe so wanted to go home. He cried as he pleaded with us to help him get home to his parents and four siblings.
He gave us their details and we were happy to reunite the family and also to offer them further support as they were clearly struggling. Abdul’s father had been unable to work through illness so his mother had set up a confectionary business from the home to earn an income while he tried to get well enough to continue working as a labourer. The children were all in school and things seemed to have improved for the family – but the arrival of COVID19 changed all that.
Abdul’s father lost all hope of getting any work, and the situation aggravated his poor health meaning he suffered even more. His mother’s business could not operate due to the restrictions and they could not afford a doctor or medicines for Abdul’s father. The family was facing a desperate time and had the added pressure of caring for Abdul’s grandfather who lives with them. We rushed to the family’s aid when we heard about the situation and have been able to provide emergency food and supplies to sustain them. We’ve also linked them up with a community kitchen programme that is supporting vulnerable families and given them advice on hygiene and washing in order to stay safe from the virus.
Abdul’s mother was so grateful she contacted us to say:
“We never expected so much help during this time of crisis, especially after you already helped us by getting Abdul back home to us. Thank you.”
