CHHASE & our staff & our beneficiaries, hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.

A second wave beginning in March 2021 was much larger than the first, with shortages of vaccines, hospital beds, oxygen cylinders and other medicines in parts of the country^.By late April, India led the world in new and active cases. On 30 April 2021, it became the first country to report over 400,000 new cases in a 24-hour period.

YOUR SUPPORT HELP IN BATTLING COVID-19

Provide COVID care kits to 250 CHHASE volunteers. These kits contain thermal guns, oximeters, masks, gloves, aprons, sanitizers, handwashing liquid soap bottles, and handbook with information on COVID-19 disease.
Train CHHASE volunteers on COVID-19 disease, containment measures, common signs and symptoms, home isolation protocols, usage of oximeters and thermal guns, and vaccine hesitancy.
Each CHHASE volunteers will reach out to families in villages and create awareness about COVID-19, hygiene measures to prevent the disease, address COVID-19 and vaccines myths and stigma.
Work with Gram Panchayats and Primary Health Centers to equip CHHASE volunteers on personal safety and precautions.
Work with the government to ensure substantial increase in the health budget to strengthen the Indian public health system.

OUR RESPONSE IN RURAL AREAS

CHHASE volunteers are the pillars of delivering healthcare to rural communities. They go door-to-door educating people about maternal and child health, contraception, immunisation, and sanitation, as well as enrolling them in health programmes and monitoring the results. They also ensure immunization, give first aid, and administer antimalarial and anti-tubercular drugs and oral rehydration solutions (ORS). CHHASE volunteers are an integral part in tackling COVID-19 spread in rural areas.

A survey conducted by CHHASE India in Tamil Nadu shows that only 60% CHHASE volunteers were provided with masks and only 50% received gloves. This put the workers at in increased risk of contracting COVID-19.

We must once again fight the pandemic, which is now causing greater devastation in rural areas. Join our Mission “FIGHT COVID SPREAD” to overcome this crisis together.

Livelyhood during lockdowns

35 year old, KANNIYAMMA ran an street vending business in Melmanmalai of chengam taluk, Tiruvannamali district of Tamil Nadu. She earned about 350- 450 per day. The lockdown meant Zero income for her 6 member family.

With the help of globalgiving, we decided to work with KANNIYAMMA to distribute cooked meals to jobless hungry workers under our “Food for hungry” project. This way food was supplied to hungry and KANNIYAMMA family earned an income to run their family.

KANNIYAMMA, withthe help of her family prepared meals for one week. She prepared meals under sanitized conditions at her home. “The money we got under this one week came at a crucial time for all of us.” Now KANNIYAMMA family is ready to take bigger orders during this crucial pandemic.

How you supported Roja

13 year old, Roja, child ofShanthi, a tribal parent, studied in 8^th grade. Due to lockdowns, her studies were disturbed and schools were closed. Online classes were started in schools and as a tribal family girl, her parents were unable to provide cell phone to attend online classes. Due to this, she felt that her future is in danger and she started isolating herself from others and during nights she was unable to sleep even. With your, we have provided a cell phone to her and now she become fit and sleeping well during nights.

With the help of globalgiving, we decided to work with such children to provide cell phones, life skills trainings, plays for children to engage them in good feeling and promoting mental health.

Thank you for helping in critical COVID-19 period

Dear Donor/ supporter !

CHHASE & our staff & our beneficiaries, hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.

The 2^nd wave of COVID-9 crisis threatens everyone's way of life, but it is especially difficult for some of us, including people with pre-existing medical conditions, older adults, individuals experiencing homelessness, refugees and migrants, wage workers, poor communities, and those with inflexible jobs.

Your generous support helped us to save our beneficiaries from the spread of pandemic and enabled us to provide sanitizers, masks, glouses,soaps and mainly healthy food to keep them without starvation during COVID-19 pandemic and also mainly adopting social distancing. Now we are making arrangement to vaccinate all our beneficiaries.

Our primary responsibility is saving our communities from spreading of this deadly IInd wave of pandemic.

Our community kitchens play a key role to stop the starvation and give confidence that there is someone to help them in critical COVID-19 crisis. With such provision, migrant workers, poor jobless workers children and elderly people are benefitted.

We at CHHASE going door to door to create awareness about how to safe guard from COVID-19. During this visits, we have seen the helpless of rural informal sector workers and their children starvation. They do not have a daily wage work to help to feed their families. We have also come across many neglected elders are also suffer of this pandemic disease. These under privileged and children are facing starvation due to lockdowns.

Children are happy with new dresses

Your generous support helped us to save our beneficiary and their families from the spread of pandemic and enabled us to provide sanitizers, masks, glouses,soaps and mainly food groceries to keep them without starvation during COVID-19 pandemic.

Elections in Tamil Nadu.

The sixteenth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 6 April 2021, to elect representatives from the 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The poll is the state's first assembly election after the demises of the two most prominent Chief Ministers in its modern history, J.Jayalalitha and M.Karunanidhi, who had died in 2016 and 2018 respectively. The term of the state's current fifteenth legislative assembly will conclude on 24 May 2021. CHHASE created awareness to all to vote for right candidate.

New Dresses to tribal children.

On 10^th april, we have distributed new dresses to tribal children. All the 100 tribal children are happy to receive their new dresses, who are otherwise left to wear shabby clothes.Their parents also happy and promised us to send their children to our after school education centres and to main schools.

With your timely support, CHHASE helped them with ration kits twice and we provided clothing during lockdowns.

A small note about Tribal people.

The tribe numbers around 215,000 spread across three states: 189,621 in Tamil Nadu, 23,721 in Kerala and 10,259 in Karnataka. Those in Karnataka are named Iruligas. The Irulas are mainly concentrated in northern Tamil Nadu: in a wedge extending from Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts in the west to Ariyalur and Cuddalore districts in the south and Tiruvallur district in the north. Small populations live in Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts and were classified by Thurston as a different population. In Kerala, the Irulas are in Palakkad district, while in Karnataka they are concentrated in Ramanagara and Bangalore districts.

Cattle-breeding is main source of income. Wild resources like honey, firewood and the like are also collected. The main occupation of the Irulas has been snake and rat catching. They also work as labourers (coolies) in the fields of the landlords during the sowing and harvesting seasons. Fishing is also a minor occupation. The original occupation of these people was rat and snake catching. Since the abolishing of snake catching by the Indian Government, the community had to abandon their migratory lifestyle and make their living among the suspicious mainstream society. The community has settled down in the outer edge of various villages, trying to make their living in as daily laborer in the fields, bonded labour in rice mills. Since, they do not have education and relevant livelihood skills.
