March 2024 SAVECats Report

Large Cat Colony

Welcome to our March 2024 Report!

Thank you for your sustained support for community cats!

In the 4th quarter of 2023, from July 1 to Oct 31, we performed 241 feral cat surgeries in Anne Arundel County, with 129 spays and 112 neuters.  We continue to work with several partners in other MD counties to help 100s of additional community cats.

We expect to be done with this grant well before the next grant starts on April 1, 2024!

We wanted to share with you a story about some of our recent work.  Enjoy!

SAVECats Saves Cats’ Days

A mother contacted her daughter and asked her for a favor.  She wondered if her daughter could take care of a few outdoor cats on her property while she was out of town. Now, the daughter knew her Mom had been caring for a few cats but, to prepare herself, asked how many. Her Mom had told her that there were, “oh, 5 or 6 cats” that she needed to feed – and that she thought they were fixed.

When she got to her Mom’s house, and walked around to the back porch, she discovered over 20 cats waiting to be fed!  Moreover, none were ear tipped; in other words, none were spayed or neutered.  The daughter was shocked.  But, as SAVECats had previously helped her with spaying her own outdoor cats, she knew just who to call. When SAVECats arrived on scene, we had fourteen traps filled within the hour, and all 32(!) cats in the colony trapped in one day with the help of an all-star volunteer!

These kitties not only got their necessary vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries but also, for those suffering from upper respiratory infections, they got antibiotics too. Most of the cats were healthy and very definitely feral, but there was one guy who kept following us around and sneezing near us when we bent down to set the traps. He would shy away if we tried to pet him, but always stayed within a couple of feet. After we trapped him and held him for a week to let his upper respiratory infection heal, he turned out to be a total love bug!!!  This darling boy has also hit the jackpot and ended up being adopted a loving cat dad!

We are so grateful for those who know and use SAVECats. Without your support of this program and support for proactive TNR legislation in Anne Arundel County, we could never have achieved this much!
