Hello Otter Supporters,
As we reported to you previously, the otter individuals in our breeding core are doing well physically. They also continue to tend their nest and mate on a regular basis (we know this from keeper observations as well as infrared camera footage from their nocturnal activity).
However, after every mating episode, our team counts the days until a litter should be born, and invariably, nothing happens… this is very sad and frustrating given the critically endangered status of river otters in Israel.
Our zoological team are now considering a possible veterinary checkup for our individuals to determine whether there are any problems with their reproductive abilities. Such a checkup is a weighty consideration given that we do not want to induce a stress response in any of our animals.
We will continue to keep you posted on future developments.
Yours in hope,
Team Otter at the Jerusalem Zoo
