Aquatic habitats and otters remain in danger of extinction in Israel.
Why?
Water pumping results in springs and rivers drying up and changes the water quality in bodies of water.
Industrial, agricultural, and urban pollution cause harm to the habitat.
How does this affect the otter?
With damage to the aquatic habitat and their special vegetation, animals like the otter, which populate them will disappear.
Many types of plants, fish, amphibians, birds and even mammals which live in freshwater habitats have already become extinct in Israel, with others on the brink of extinction.
Some species lived exclusively in Israel and thus have become extinct.
The Otter Conservation Program at our Zoo, while yet to have positive results, is working to save this native species.
