Hello to all of our valued supporters.
Since we last reported to you, we are pleased to report that we were able to obtain a male otter from Novosibirsk Zoo in Russia to join our female. So far, the male has adapted to his new home very well and, aside from delighting visitors with his inquisitive personality, he and the female otter seem to be getting along rather well. Our keepers have noted some nest building activity by the female and so we are hoping that this is a good sign in terms of future breeding efforts.
There is more to wildlife conservation efforts than the practical aspects of caring for the animals. An important facet is also raising public awareness and inspiring the community to help. This is especially important in Israel where aquatic habitats face significant threats. We are proud to collaborate with the International Otter Survival Fund for World Otter Awareness Day on 27 May 2015 because worldwide, 9 of the 13 otter species are declining. Otters are at the top of the food chain and use both land and water, so they are an ideal indicator of a healthy environment. This is vital for all species, including our own.
Warmly,
Team Otter at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
