Our friendly male otter
Our friendly male otter

Hello to all of our valued supporters.

Since we last reported to you, the acclimatization of our new male otter has continued, as well as the introduction of the new male to our existing female. Animal introductions in captivity are often a long and complicated process, depending on the species and on the temperament of the individual animal. In our case the male and female have been getting along smoothly but, despite initial signs of nest building on the part of the female, no breeding has occurred.

In addition, our male is a very lively character who loves to interact with visitors and keepers – very unusual for this species where individuals are usually characterized by shyness and avoidance of humans.

A few weeks ago, our keepers noticed that the female was behaving strangely and so the veterinary team examined her and found some swelling and inflammation which they think may be the result of some kind of venomous bite – either an insect or a snake. She received treatment and has recovered but is still being monitored.

We hope that in time these two lovely animals will produce offspring – we will keep you posted!

Warmly,

Team Otter at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
