Exiting plans and upgrades of the KMC Ward!

By Jo Giles | Head Angel

We can’t believe that we are already in March, the year feels like it’s really only just begun! Before we share an exciting update on a project we are planning, we wanted to pause and reflect on the meaningful impact Footprints 4 Sam made toward the end of 2025. Thanks to your support, we are able to continue transforming public healthcare spaces into environments of dignity, comfort and care for children, families and the healthcare workers who support them every day.

Through our Beautiful Memories initiative, which includes transforming paediatric wards and other key hospital areas, we completed several projects that we are incredibly proud of:

  • At the Paediatric Outpatient Department at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH) we installed new signage and unveiled a beautiful wall mural, helping to create a more welcoming and comforting environment for young patients and their families.
  • At Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, we completed a dedicated bereavement and counselling room - a calm, private space offering dignity and support to families experiencing loss, as well as a place of respite for staff.
  • We installed new curtains in Ward 1 for the 0–6 month babies, creating a more peaceful and comforting space for mothers who spend long hours at their babies’ bedsides.
  • We also refreshed and revitalised the breastfeeding room in the NICU at RMMCH offering moms a calm, supportive and private space during an incredibly vulnerable time.

Now, we are very excited to share progress on an ongoing project that is close to our hearts, the continued renovation of the Kangaroo Ward at RMMCH. We were part of the original team that created this vital ward for mothers and their tiny newborns, and now, we are further enhancing the space to improve comfort, functionality and quality of care. Our focus is on key areas that directly impact the wellbeing of both mums and the dedicated healthcare workers who care for them.

The current upgrades include modernising the kitchen areas to provide mothers with improved facilities for meal preparation and nutrition, and we are also revamping the nurses’ area to ensure staff have a comfortable environment. In addition, new individual bedside storage units are being installed for mothers, offering greater convenience and privacy during their stay.

These renovations are rooted in the importance of Kangaroo Care - a practice that promotes bonding and improves health outcomes for premature and low-birth-weight babies through skin-to-skin contact. By creating a nurturing and functional space, we support mothers in delivering this essential care, while also providing staff with the facilities they need to sustain their invaluable work.

We are so grateful to have you walking this journey with us and can’t wait to share the beautiful new spaces with you!

Until next time,

Jo and the Footprints 4 Sam Team
