Matias new opportunity at life

By Ma Dolores Fernandez | General Director

In Mexico, waiting lists in public hospitals sometimes seem endless, and during that time, the lives of many children with heart conditions hang by a thread. Kardias, determined to change that fate, promoted agreements between these hospitals and the ABC Medical Center, constructing a bridge so that patients could be promptly attended to at the ABC-Kardias Pediatric Heart Center.

Matías, a 1-year-and-2-month-old baby born with a hole in his heart that endangered his life, was on the waiting list at his local hospital in Oaxaca. At 14 months old, he barely weighed 5 kilograms—less than half of what a child his age should weigh—because his heart was working excessively, becoming extremely fatigued even while eating.

To transport Matías and many other patients who needed urgent care to Mexico City, Kardias joined forces with the company ADO, which provided round-trip transportation for the children and their families. Additionally, the ABC Medical Center ensured shelter in a refuge, easing the burden for dozens of families eagerly awaiting a chance at life for their children.

Matías, with his tiny heart making enormous efforts, arrived at the CPC, and within three days, his life took a dramatic turn: on the first day, the dedicated and passionate medical team precisely evaluated his situation; the next morning, they closed the arteriovenous canal with a skillfully executed procedure, and by the third day, Matías returned home cured with a promising future ahead.

Today, Matías has flourished. His heart, freed from the burden that oppressed it, can beat with the strength and rhythm it deserves.

Thus, Kardias, through the strategic alliances it has built and continues to operate, has shown that quality medical care is not a utopia but an achievable reality for all Mexican children born with heart conditions.

Thank you! To all donors who have made his life a possibility and who will continue to help other children.

Happy Holidays.
