What can you do in 27 seconds? Type 40 words? Turn the kettle on? Open an email?
Did you know that every 27 seconds, someone, somewhere in the world is diagnosed with blood cancer. That's 1,168,000 patients a year. Blood cancer is also the most common childhood cancer.
For many patients fighting both blood cancers and blood disorders, a stem cell transplant is needed. Unfortunately, with only 0.5% of the world's population signed up to the global stem cell database, it's very hard for patients to find a voluntary donor who is a match.
However, when organisations around the world work together, we have a better chance of finding the best stem cell source for patients.
The World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) works with its members in 55 countries to ensure reliable provision of life-saving cells whilst promoting patient and donor care and safety.
We strive for a world where access to life-saving cellular therapies for all patients is assured and donors’ rights and safety are protected.
WMDA's Search & Match Service, a.k.a. the Global database of voluntary stem cell donors and cord blood units is one of the ways we work towards achieving our mission.
In 2022, more than 40,000 searches were carried out to find the best stem cell source for a patient. These searches resulted in more than 20,000 patients receiving a life-saving stem cell transplantation.
