Project Report | Jun 9, 2023
2023 Academic Year

Dear Friends,

As we mentioned in our previous reports, there were hopes of lifting the ban on girls education in Afghanistan at the beginning of the year; however, that did not materialize and the schools remain closed for girls grades 7-12.

In light of the above and the dynamics in the areas where our schools are located, our teachers and educators on the ground have the following approach:

  1. In one of our schools, they will continue with the 2022 academic year program for girls grades 7-12, that mainly comprised of segregated classrooms and only female teachers for girls.
  2. In another school, the 2022 program has not been extended by the local officials. The teachers are holding makeshift classes in an educator's house, where the girls will continue their education.
  3. The Bamyan team is also exploring to support underground schools. We estimate that there are hundreds of underground schools operating since the collapse, where girls above grade 6 are continuing their education. We will find and support the best programs to encourage the teachers and keep the hopes of these resilient girls alive.

Since the inception of our scholarship program, with your support, we have provided 856 scholarships (466 scholarship for girls) for at-risk Hazara youth in Afghanistan. We are pleased to know that some of our High School graduates are studying in colleges and universities in India, Europe and the United States. Your generous support played a tremendous role and opened gateways for them to grow, and we need your support to do the same for those who dare to dream in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan today.

Please know that on July 12, Bamyan Foundation is participating in a generous matching campaign called July Bonus Day. The campaign is only for one day and starts at 9AM ET and ends at 11:59PM. All of our four GlobalGiving projects, including Scholarships for At-Risk Youth, will participate in this campaign. This will be a great opportunity to maximize your impact and make education accessible to as many at-risk youth as possible. We will provide more details on our social media prior to July Bonus Day.

Thank you,

Timor + The Bamyan Foundation Team
