Project Report | Feb 3, 2024
Final Update for Academic Year 2023

By Timor Karimy | Founder & President

Thank you for your generous donation to the Scholarships for At-risk Youth in Afghanistan.

Despite the enormous challenges facing the education sector in Afghanistan, we would like to share some great news with you about our program!

Out of the 188 (147 girls and 41 boys) scholarship recipients in 2023, 180 of the students sucessfully passed their final exams held in December 2023. 141 girls passed their final exams and have moved on to next grades. Please know that 92 girls (grades 7-12) studied in our underground classes last year, and 24 continued their education in one of our schools via segregated classes taught by women teachers. We are pleased to hear that seven students graduated high school last year.

You can learn more about our education/scholarship program in our previous reports. In a nutshell, in light of the ban on girls' education (grades 7-12), our community leaders and educators on the ground find creative ways to continue making education accessible for girls, and Bamyan Foundation supports their efforts.

According to one of our student's parents in a remote district in central Afghanistan, the ban on education and the ongoing gender apartheid have severly affected the mental health of girls and women across the country. Despite the small scale of our program, the parents in this district are grateful for Bamyan Foundation's support. They are appealing to include more girls in the scholarship program. For them, our scholarhsip program has become a glimmer of hope.

The new academic year begins in the third week of March, and we will continue supporting our students and educators.

Please know that our scholarship program serves Afghanistan's most marginalized Hazara community, who have been ostracized on the basis of race and religion for centuries. The community is further penalized by Afghanistan's current rulers due to their support for democractic values during the US intervention. Hazara women are in higher risks due to the intersectional factors of gender, race and religion.

Your support has made a huge a difference in helping our team continue this community-led program and we are endlessly grateful.

Thank you,

Timor + The Bamyan Foundation Team
