On my recent trip to Guatemala, I attended one of the monthly scholarship workshops led by Emilsa Peren. The topic was how stereotyping can affect our view of the world. She led the discussion of how ideas about what people, especially women, can and can’t do limits their life choices. Several women shared how things were changing in their villages. They were emboldened to share their own experience within their families as well.
In the past their families, especially their fathers, had not supported education for girls, but now many of them were encouraging the young women to continue studying, including at the university level. The example of the increasing number of educated young women, has shown them that education for their daughters is worthwhile. It is wonderful to see signs of change!
I feel that these changes have come about because the young women who persevered without family support, the pioneers, many of whom were Kateri Fund scholarship holders, have proven that their education improves not only their lives, but the lives of the whole family and community. Thank you for being a part of this change.
Our scholarship program supported fourteen young women in 2016 in junior high and high school career training. Three recipients graduated in October and joined the workforce. Eager young women are already applying to take their place.
We plan to expand our program in 2017. To do that we need at least 50 new members in the Kateri Angels’ Circle. Our Angel Circle members pledge to make an on-going monthly donation to the project. If you make your donation between November 29th and Dec. 31st, there are matching funds available. Join the Kateri Angels' Circle during this time and encourage your friends to do the same. With these added funds, we can award more scholarahips in Jan. knowing that we will have ample funds.
It is your support that makes it possible for these young women to prove that an education improves lives.
Thank you!
