The Guatemalan school year ended in October. Carmela Paz Bal planned an end of the year excursion and party to celebrate. Read her report below.
Excursion to the Instituto Técnico de Capacitacion (INTECAP).
INTECAP is a government agency which provides both technical and degree career education for Guatemalans This excursion aided all the young women to increase their knowledge of possible career choices.
They were received by the manager who gave a talk on the difference between a technical career and the short courses available, the requirements , and the costs. He animated the group to prepare themselves and always to keep learning new things.
The group then toured the facility and visited the laboratory of each of the careers. The instructors gave an explication of their area of study and encouraged the young women to study careers that were not common for women like electronics, auto mechanics, carpentry, and refrigeration.
Afterwards, the group visited the workshops of cooking, cake decorating, beauty salon including hair styling, manicure, and pedicure, flower arranging, tailoring, and repair of industrial sewing machines.
Many of the young women showed an interest in the courses because they are good courses. They are an inexpensive way to prepare yourself for a career.
Clausura
After the excursion to INTECAP, the young women traveled by bus to La Villa Restaurant in El Tejar to celebrate the ending of the year with lunch and the presentation of gifts.
Andrea, a 2012 graduate, was the master of ceremonies. She and the other 2012 graduates who volunteered in the program this year, Mishel, and Crisitina were presented with thank you gifts.
The 2013 high school graduates, Silvia, Blanca, Francisca, and Barbara were recognized for their achievement with a gift as well. Blanca and Silvia received a diploma in Science and Letters with an Orientation in Tourism, Barbara as a office secretary, and Francisca as a Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural Elementary School Teacher.
Glenda, Sandra, and Clara graduated from junior high school and will start high school career training in 2014.
Candelaria led the gift exchange. Each of the young women wrote a phrase on a sheet of paper. Then they chose a paper. The phrase was read and a gift was exchanged with the person who wrote the phrase. Everyone enjoyed the fun of hearing the phrases and receiving a gift.
It was a day very fruitful because it was full of both learning and fun!
In January, we will be awarding scholarships to the continuing students and new applicants. We have nine new candidates who all merit scholarships. At this date we only have enough funds to give three new scholarships. We are seeking enough funds for all nine young women. Our goal is $3000. If you want to invest in the future of these young women make an extra donation now or encourage your friends and family to get involved.
