The pupils of Glenn Paige Nonkilling School are on holiday. Their teachers are actively preparing for the start of classes this Monday, March 30th. No more swimming in Lake Tanganyika! No more games of hide-and-seek among the houses! The mothers are relieved… they were tired of yelling at their unruly children…
We note, with relief, a relative lull on the various war fronts in our region. The clashes, whether in the Ngandja forest or in the mid- and high-altitude plateaus (Fizi), between different pro-government and rebel militias, and the national and foreign armies, have subsided. Travel on the roads and tracks is easy, and deadly ambushes have decreased… only the impassable roads remain due to the rains, which have also flooded the lake and rivers, causing distress among the population.
We are continuing to deliver construction materials, albeit in small quantities, to our school and have just hired woodcutters to prepare planks for the roof. The school director said: ‘Achi a mayengo ale monyata boni boni lakini twabea makala tuuwe ikubaa metu masomo’; this phrase in Kibembe, the main language spoken in the Fizi territory, means ‘the work is progressing slowly, but we are determined to complete the construction of our school.’
