Fw: Report for Tanzania Development Trust Technology project 21844

By Janet CHAPMAN | Project Leader

I am writing this report from Tanzania where I have been visiting schools that have benefitted from the technology programme. Schools have many challenges – often no water, no electricity, and few books, yet students demonstrate a hunger for learning. To that end, one of the schools we support, Tunamkumbuka in Kagera recently decided to allow the students who wanted to sleep in the school classrooms so they could study together in the evenings and make good use of the electricity and tablet computers there.

Over 200 students decided to sleep in the school, despite there being no dining hall or dormitory – they simply cooked and ate on the ground outside and made mattresses out of grass to sleep on the floor of the classrooms.

It is dedication like that which made Tunamkumbuka the second most improved school in Tanzania last year, and we salute them.

Another project I will be visiting next week is a community library in Kigoma. If children miss school for any reason it is impossible for them to resume. If you don’t pass your primary exams you cannot go to secondary school, and if you are too old to go to primary school, government schools won’t take you, even if you have completely missed out on an education. Therefore this library works with children who have missed their chance of an education. By using Swahili literacy apps they ensure they learn to read, Whatever their age.
