Technology helps deaf youth into employment

By Janet CHAPMAN | Project Leader

In Tanzania, an estimated 12% of adults aged 15 and above live with a functional difficulty such as in seeing, hearing, walking, or remembering (Disability Data Initiative, Tanzania Country Brief, 2023). However, beyond their physical disability, they also face social and economic challenges.

Employment remains a major gap.. Access to education and training is also limited, especially in rural areas where services are few and stigma still discourages participation.

That is why we are supporting centres like Matumbulu Vocational Training Centre for the Deaf, south of Dodoma. Here, young deaf people learn practical skills in welding, carpentry, tailoring, gardening, and Tanzanian Sign Language — and with those skills, they build independence.

Recently, thanks to your donations, we’ve been able to supply them with a laptop to help students learn Tanzanian Sign Language and other vocational skills which has been groundbreaking.

Noel, the student pictured here, captures that spirit of empowerment: a young person who, through training and perseverance, is now able to support their family through their own work. It is a reminder that disability does not define potential — opportunity does.

Your donation helps providie the tools, training, and connectivity that open doors for learners with disabilities. Each success story represents a step towards a more inclusive and self-reliant Tanzania.

If you share that vision, you can help us expand access to education and livelihoods for young people across Tanzania

With gratitude

Janet
