RUNNING BARRIERS IN ALTOS DE CAZUCA

By Natalia Duarte, Nicolas Florez, Danilo Beltran | Communications and Resource Coordinator; interns

On Saturday September 6th, Tiempo de Juego carried out the 1st 5k-zucá race named "Running Barriers". The 5k-zucá was an athletic race which took place in the community of Altos de Cazucá, intending to be a scenario for creating collective memories and strengthening social fabric in a city which limits the socio- economic and cultural exchange between inhabitants that belong to different urban contexts.

The event was sponsored by different partners such as the non-governmental organization Women Win, the Municipal Institute for Recreation and Sports of Soacha  (IMRDS), Porvenir, Bavaria, Postobón, Vased Foundation, and Fantastica advertising agency. Thanks to their support and our Global Giving donors’ unconditional help, we were able to organize and execute a massive event in which around 450 people from Bogotá and Altos de Cazucá ran against imaginary social barriers that tend to prevent people from recognizing themselves  as citizens of a same single society.

Kelly Prieto, athletics Professor in Tiempo de Juego, says that the race was a success: "We took a very positive balance, we fulfilled all of our expectations; both children and adults were very happy. In fact, we did something that the Soacha’s IMRD was unable to do in the past: organize a massive sporting event in Altos de Cazucá, a vulnerable community where the high levels of crime and violence prevent people from other parts of the city from coming in.

Once again, Tiempo de Juego confirmed that sport is the best tool for promoting social transformation.

Hope to see you running barriers next year in the 2nd 5k-zucá Race!
