Reporting Period: Current Quarter
Programme Area: Sports for Development / Girls’ Empowerment
1. Project Overview
The Score for Success project continues to use sports as a powerful tool to promote life skills, confidence, teamwork, and social inclusion among vulnerable children, with a strong focus on girls’ participation. During this reporting period, the project experienced a period of transition due to limited logistical and financial resources. While this affected the regular delivery of structured sports sessions, the project team took adaptive steps to ensure that the core objectives of girls’ empowerment and life skills development remained on track.
2. Challenge Encountered
During the quarter, the project faced a gap in support, particularly in areas related to training logistics, access to structured coaching, and consistent sports engagement opportunities. This posed challenges to:
Regular participation of girls in sports activities
Continuity of life skills learning through organized sports
Motivation and retention of beneficiaries
Girls, who are often underrepresented in community sports spaces, were most affected, highlighting the need for an immediate and sustainable solution.
3. Adaptive Response: Partnership with Junior Football Camp (JFC)
In response, SCEF established a strategic partnership with Junior Football Camp (JFC) under the WELL GIRLS Initiative. This collaboration now strengthens the Score for Success project by:
Providing structured football training for girls
Creating safe, inclusive, and supportive sports spaces
Promoting discipline, teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence
Ensuring regular engagement despite previous resource constraints
4. WELL GIRLS Initiative within Score for Success
The WELL GIRLS Initiative now serves as the gender-focused implementation arm of the Score for Success project. Through this approach, the programme:
Ensures intentional inclusion of girls in sports-based development
Addresses gender-related barriers to participation in sports
Builds self-esteem, voice, and leadership through team engagement
Links sports activities with mentorship and psychosocial support
5. Results and Progress So Far
Despite early challenges in the quarter, the new partnership has resulted in:
Restoration of structured and regular sports sessions for girls
Improved attendance, motivation, and enthusiasm among participants
Reinforced life skills learning through consistent sports engagement
A more sustainable model for programme delivery moving forward
6. Conclusion
While the initial lack of support posed a setback, it also created an opportunity to strengthen the programme through a targeted partnership. The collaboration with JFC under the WELL GIRLS Initiative has enhanced the Score for Success project by ensuring that girls continue to receive quality sports engagement tied to life skills development. This experience demonstrates the project’s resilience, adaptability, and commitment to inclusive empowerment, even in the face of resource constraints.
