Empowering Women through Agroforestry in Guatemala

Your generous support enabled Seeds Programs International (SPI), in collaboration with Wellkind Guatemala, to advance sustainable development in Kaqchikel Mayan communities around Lake Atitlán. These communities face deeply interconnected challenges of landscape degradation and food insecurity. Compounding issues of deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution not only harm the environment but also reduce agricultural productivity, worsening malnutrition and economic instability. SPI’s partnership with Wellkind addresses these challenges head-on by promoting sustainable food systems, community empowerment, and environmental restoration.

Program Approach

At the heart of this initiative is agroforestry—a proven method for restoring degraded landscapes. By integrating tree planting with native food crops and vegetables, the project revitalizes soil health, curbs erosion, boosts food production, and fosters biodiversity. A special focus on women’s empowerment ensures the program is both inclusive and community-driven.

  • Existing women’s groups actively participate in training, seedling procurement, and leadership development, helping to build financial independence and elevate their roles in community decision-making.

  • Fourteen local Kaqchikel women, trained through Wellkind’s leadership program, are leading implementation efforts—ensuring cultural relevance, community ownership, and long-term sustainability.

Key Accomplishments Last Year:

  • Planted 7,000 Trees with Indigenous Families: Partnered with 300 families (1,750 individuals) to plant trees for environmental restoration and the production of food and income-generating crops.

  • Established Community-Led Agroforests:  Integrated native understory crops—pigeon pea, chaya, chipilín, maize, and vegetables—into reforested plots, enhancing food security and improving soil health and stability.

  • Empowered Indigenous Communities:  Supported 8 towns and villages, indirectly benefiting over 4,000 individuals through increased crop yields, sustainable livelihoods, and capacity-building.

  • Strengthened Environmental Sustainability:  Expanded reforestation and permaculture efforts to combat deforestation and restore ecosystems, improving water filtration and climate resilience.

Thank you for your commitment to this work. Your support is helping to build stronger, more resilient communities rooted in sustainable agriculture and local leadership. Together, we are seeding a brighter future!
