Deep in the heart of Guatemalan highland mountains, Ixil Maya communities continue to live their traditional way of life. The Ixil region has maintained its rich Maya traditions and heritage, despite the recent history of a violent civil war, and later, a corn- and coffee-based agricultural economy in which families often struggle to feed their families with adequate nutrition. Hunger and undernutrition is a common problem in these indigenous communities, with an 80% poverty rate.
With this context, we are working with local, indigenous partner AMACHAJUL to run vegetable growing projects to augment starch-based diets to ensure adequate nutrition for families. Thanks to supporters like you, we just built a greenhouse that will be able to produce vegetables year-round at Buena Vista school, a school that is a full day walk from the nearest town center, in a remote mountain village. This will augment the school garden the children already have.
This school garden provides not only vegetables for the school kids, but for all the members of the community. The schools is a meeting point for all members of the community, as all of the families have children in school. Family members can bring vegetables home to cook in their dinners, to ensure that everyone is receiving vitamins and minerals from vegetables in addition to their starch- and bean-dominant diet.
This garden is not only filling bellies, but ensuring that young indigenous children are growing healthy to become productive adults. It wouldn't be possible without your support.
Remember, until April 7, your donation will be matched 50% by GlobalGiving! Donate today to ensure children around the world have access to life-giving vegetables. It truly does take a village.
