Dear friend of Karuna Germany,
Today is International Women's Day!
Celebrate this day today with a donation on GlobalGiving for this project!
Did you know that International Women's Day originated in Germany in the fight for equal rights, the right to vote for women and the emancipation of women workers in the period before the First World War?
In 1977, the UN General Assembly recognized March 8th as International Women's Day.
What does this day mean to you?
Support women and girls in India today to be able to defend themselves confidently!
Unfortunately, there are more and more cases of sexual violence and brutal rape in India.
The international media recently reported another case of a tourist being raped in the district of Dumka in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. Last week, the Spanish woman was attacked and repeatedly raped by a group of 7 men while camping with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend was beaten up.
Saying "NO!" and standing up to sexist violence is not something that comes naturally to Indian women and girls. They have grown up in the knowledge that they are at the mercy of social power relations. And that men can do what they want.

Therefore, after strengthening self-confidence, practical self-defense is also part of the program.
The "Wenlido" self-defense courses are part of the Prabodhini project in Nagpur, which supports women and children.
Instead of resigning themselves to a life of poverty and oppression, often with violence, creativity and joy of life and self-confident trust in their own abilities emerge despite all the difficulties.
The girls and young women learn how to deal skillfully with these everyday situations and develop a verbal quick-wittedness that shuts up the bullies.
The most effective tricks and kicks are practiced again and again to fend off attackers so that they are effective in an emergency.
