The Magic of Camp

By Maggie Chilton | Off-Site Program Coordinator

Our summer at Piedmont Wildlife Center has been one for the books! At all three locations in Orange, Durham, and Wake counties there have been so many kids each week excited to discover new creatures and explore new forests. There is a kind of magic that happens at our camps. It’s hard to describe because it looks, feels, and sounds different for each group and individual. To illustrate, I would like to tell you about a camper at our Orange county location, Lucas. He has attended four camps at Blackwood Farm Park and is always so excited to be there. Over time we have noticed him grow and mature.

Lucas loves to whittle, a newfound passion he has picked up from camp. Like most of us, when adopting new hobbies, he was not very good at it at first and had to be reminded of our whittling rules often. Now he is able to help other campers remember the whittling rules and even gives them suggestions on techniques in carving special crafts. Whittling has helped Lucas focus and observe things around him, something that has been a challenge.

On the last day of Coyote Camp at Blackwood, Lucas used binoculars to observe the clouds in the sky. While laying on the ground describing all of the shapes he saw in the great beyond, he said, “It’s like the wind whittles the clouds away…”

Your donations help to open the door to magic moments like this. These ‘aha’ moments are what makes our camps so valuable. We thank you for keeping us in mind and look forward to providing the magic of camp to more kids with your support.
