Outdoor Memories

By Maggie Chilton | Off-Site Program Coordinator

When time stood still in the field...
When time stood still in the field...

We are about halfway through our fall camp season and it has been a blast! We have seen many new faces along with many old friends but, most of all, fantastic memories were made. Your donations have helped to make a lasting impact on many kids. One remarkable moment that stands out was the 100 degree fall day. The entire week was hot and felt more like summer camp. We got to play in the mud and water again before the weather started to feel more like fall. On ‘The Hottest Day of Fall’ we spent the entire afternoon playing with soaked sponges and being sprayed by a water hose. We had fun giving soaked hugs to dry people who wanted them and watching water droplets form into fantastic rainbows. On this afternoon, time stood still as campers, teens, and staff of all ages kicked off their shoes in our big field and ran laughing through shimmering streams of water.

At Piedmont Wildlife Center, your donations not only support children taking home nature knowledge, but also memories that can never be topped. Our mission is to connect people with nature; this is impossible without involving our emotional bodies as well. When we establish connections with each other we feel happy and safe. This is how we learn best. Lessons that are attached to memories tend to be more lasting. Our older generations of CITs (counselors in training) have such a love for camp and for nature because they remember the memories from growing up in our community.

When you donate to support our camps, your dollars not only cover bird identification, animal tracking, and watershed exploration, but most importantly, you are supporting memories. Reflect on your memories playing and exploring outside and the feelings that come up with those thoughts. We thank you for your donations that will allow campers the same feelings years from now.
