Back at Umstead State Park Exploring Nature

On Groundhog's Day, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and that means that there are only a few more weeks of winter. For some, this means that it is almost time to get outside. For us, here at the Piedmont Wildlife Center, it means that we are already outside!

Last week, we started our winter and spring sessions of Homeschool in the Wild. Campers had a nice little break but were excited to be back out in nature, to see old familiar faces, and anticipate the possibility of making new friends. Our Homeschool program welcomes a variety of identifies and backgrounds to reach a common goal of being a community that enjoys exploring the outdoors. This fits the definition of inclusivity,  which is a core value here at the Piedmont Wildlife Center.

At our Leigh Farm Park location, our community has grown to 50 participants on Tuesday and Thursday each day. This has been made possible thanks to a massive effort from staff, parents, and gracious donors like you!

When the pandemic hit,  we had to cancel the possibility of our community being at Umstead State Park in Wake County for almost 2 years. But, by another massive effort from staff, parents, and donors like you, we are back to having Homeschool in the Wild and summer camp programming at Umstead State Park! This has been a big relief for us and are excited to have our community back at Umstead.

Now that we are back in Wake County, along with being in Durham and Orange Counties, we can provide opportunities for more children to explore, interact with others, and just be themselves. This has been made possible by efforts from our staff, community, and donors like you!  Since  November,  we have been receiving registrations for our 2022 winter, spring, and summer camp sessions and these programs are filling up fast.

Including everyone in our community can be a struggle with financial needs that we are unable to meet.  Families are still requesting help for this aid at a high level. Everyone deserves a chance to be a part of a community and to help it grow long-lasting memories and connections. We need your help to fund scholarships, buy equipment, and pay quality staff to help run our programs. Please consider extending your generosity to help us meet these needs.

We are so grateful for everything you do - our work would not be possible without your belief and support.

Best,

The Piedmont Wildlife Center Team
