A New Summer Approaches!!

By Katie Disharoon | Education Team Lead & Durham County Coordinator

A lucky find at camp!
A lucky find at camp!

Greetings,

Once again, all of us on The Education Team here at PWC are counting down the days until summer camp begins! As the days warm up, we can feel it coming - and it is so exciting!

We are looking forward to another amazing summer at Piedmont Wildlife Center. This year, we have the opportunity to continue our programs in three North Carolina parks: Leigh Farm Park in Durham, Blackwood Farm Park in Chapel Hill, and William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh. At all three locations, we will get to explore biodiverse forests, run through expansive fields, and wade through creeks, ponds, and marshes during ten weeks of outdoor programming. In addition to our standard ten weeks of camp, we are thrilled to announce that we are running even more teen camps than we have in recent years. We will have two advanced skills camps, Teen Archery and Teen Advanced Survival, four backpacking trips to the Appalachian Mountains, each with varying difficulty and mileage, and one brand new fly-fishing trip!

No matter what new developments may occur with our programs, one thing consistently remains true: our summer camps would not be as successful as they are without the support of the PWC community. Every donation has an impact - from the small, like donating crafting supplies so campers can develop a new skill, to the large, like donating to our ongoing scholarship fund. We are so appreciative for each donation that we receive. Every bit counts and helps us get closer to our goal of connecting people with nature and building a community that cares about one another and the natural world around them.

This summer, thanks to the generous donations we have received, we have been able to offer nineteen camp scholarships, awarding $4,330 to help support families in the Triangle. Thanks to you, these campers will learn how their actions can have a big impact on the animals in their community, how to identify trees and other edible plants, and how to play together as a team. We are grateful to our community and donors who have helped us with PWC's goal!

Thank you for all that you do!
