Sights and Sounds of Summer Camp!

Summer camp is in full gear as we approach the midway point of the season.  The woods are filled with laughter, rustling leaves, camp fire smoke, singing and the beat of drums.  Children have caked themselves with mud, climbed trees, waded in creeks, tracked animals, honed their nature awareness skills, learned how to use binoculars, find birds and identify them, and survival skills, just to name a few of the activities.  We are so grateful to have  many of our campers attend thanks to your support!  Several of the scholarship recipients are first timers to our program and are so happy that they were able to come here.

A few of our recipients were in our Ancient Ways camp. This camp was a huge hit providing the opportunity to create a village inspired by Paleo Indians.  Nancy Basket, a very special artist who makes baskets, favorite elder, and sharer of Native American wisdom and stories, joined us to teach us basket making, ways of Native Americans indians, and their tales. Natural arts, cooking over a fire, hearing stories, playing music, and Paleo Olympics were all a large part of this camp culture and sparked creativity amongst our campers. One of the most impressive creations from the older campers was a very large shelter and xylophone made out of pine logs (it can also serve as a table). Campers, parents, and the rest of the staff were all in awe. Paleo Olympics was a favorite of Wyatt, one of our scholarship recipients. And some campers, like Henry, another scholarship candidate, loved all the activities!

Many more children sent in thank you notes expressing their gratitude to you! There is not enough space to share them all so I just included a couple of our favorites. Without your support, we would not have been able to reach some of these students who got so much out of their experience here at Piedmont Wildlife Center. We have a few more weeks to go and look forward to more children smiling and happy thanks to your generosity.
