Native of paradise

By Ana Milena Ordosgoitia / Maritza Diaz | Project Leader

Jose Raul
Jose Raul

José Raul was born in Baru, a territory he considers paradise.

As he says, his family is not only large in number but also full of love and solidarity. His mother cooks. She makes what José Raul considers the best seafood “arepas” of the hole island, which she sells at the town’s entrance. This has given his family the income needed to have the necessary.

Living in paradise has made him a happy person. He remembers when he was 3 and lived in front of the port. He felt the freedom of being able to fish and play at the same time in Baru’s crystalline waters. Also the mangroves, his friends, vital part of the ecosystem and that not only protected his town from erosion but also him from the imaginary monsters he fought against with his childhood friends.

Through his life, José Raul has collected various happy moments, as the day of his graduation from school. That day, he decided he wanted to study a career related to tourism because of all the hotels located near his hometown.

He told his family about his decision and his cousin Juan Daniel who had studied to be a Barman in the Technical and Entrepreneurship School of Baru, suggested him to do so. That is how he started studying Table & Bar.

As he is asked of his future plans, José Raul says he sees himself working in one of the hotels in Baru, he passes through every day in his way to school. He is even thinking of keep studying after he finishes his technical career.

José Raul dreams of people in his town having more access to education and health, once the road that connects Baru to the rest of the island and to the city is finished.
