Marimar

By Maritza Diaz | Project Leader

Marimar
Marimar

Today, we will tell you about Marimar, a young girl from Baru, who got her name, because of the way she was born:

“20 years ago, when my mother was pregnant with me, she and my grandmother lived on the Rosario Islands. They worked there as cooks in a hotel. On December 4, she started labor and since there was no hospital in the Rosario Islands or in Baru, she had to get to Santa Ana town, the nearest community with a hospital.

When my mother’s boss found out she was in labor, she asked the Coast Guard to take her to Santa Ana’s Health Center.

My mom, my grandmother and the Coast Guard left the Rosario Islands, heading to Santa Ana, but when they were on their way, my mom had the strongest contractions. At that moment, the Coast Guard told my mom “You won't make it there, I'm going to have to receive the baby here”, my mom agreed, and I was born almost immediately, there, in the middle of the sea. Therefore, I was named Marimar (“mar” as “sea” in Spanish).

I currently live in Baru with my mother, my grandmother, and my sister, with whom I share the passion for gastronomy. I decided to study gastronomy, because the women I most admire in the hole world are cooks and I think I inherited  their magic in the kitchen.

In the future, I want to have my own chain of restaurants and to achieve this, I must continue training and focus on that. I see myself teaching other people and generating employment in my community, mainly women, to support them and to contribute to their empowerment. I know myself very well and I know that when I put my touch of love on things, everything flows, like the sea”.
