THE ME THEN AND THE ME NOW

Note: FPVI continues to be pleasantly amazed and proud of the transformation in the students in our care. The transformation varies in each student both in the period it takes for the change to manifest and the degree of that change. The transformation is quite evident: it is positive not just on the surface but more so internally, based on each student's description of the experience. Beyond strengthening academic competency through mentorship and tutorials, side activities such as journal-keeping, open mic, art-making, role-playing help expand their self-imposed limitations. Sustained encouragement on the importance of basic values such as kindness, respectfulness and teamwork further strengthens the holistic development we aspire for each student.

The following piece is a testament to that change. Blessy is in Grade 12 and looks forward to pursuing college next year. Indeed, hers is one of the more tangible transformations: she is now comfortable articulating her thoughts and actively participating in discussions. --- FPVI

THE ME THEN AND THE ME NOW by Blessy Maturan

Shy, quiet, and absolutely clueless—that’s how I would describe my sixteen-year-old self when I first came to FPVI.

I was shy because I didn’t know how to act in a new environment with people I needed to get along with. I was quiet because I never knew what to say or how to start a conversation. That’s why I always chose the single chair—because if I sat alone, I wouldn’t have to talk to a seatmate and could just listen freely. And I was clueless. Even after the orientation and kind advice from caring individuals, I remained too overwhelmed to comprehend what I was supposed to do. That uncertainty only added to my nervousness.

Looking back, I realize how far I’ve come. In just a year, I discovered so much—not only the value of academic competence but, more importantly, facets of myself I never thought existed. Who would have thought I’d learn to paint? To sing, dance, and act—things I was too shy to try. I didn’t know I could be this jolly with my fellow scholars, feel this close to them, and care this deeply for them as we work closely together and help each other on various activities. While academic excellence is vital, inner comfort and joy provide a powerful motivation for me to improve myself holistically and enhance my prospects for the future. This realization has been a key factor in my continuing personal growth.

None of this would have happened without the FPVI—the preceding batches of scholars, my peers, our mentors and tutors, and the FPVI team. They are the reason I am who I am today. They helped me discover and develop many untapped facets of myself, helping me become a better person.  With sustained guidance and encouragement, I know I still have a lot to learn. But I’m no longer the girl who walked in shy, quiet, and clueless.

I like the me Now who is a far cry from the me Then.
