Lisal loved working in Sri Lanka. She always took precautions and respected the culture. She dressed modestly, respected the curfews and kept aware of her surroundings.
One morning just after getting up for work, a man attacked Lisal as she walked into her kitchen to make coffee. She did her best to fight him off and managed a loud scream before he gagged her. The man began to rape her but stopped and fled out the back door when he heard a knock on the front door. Lisal's neighbor heard her scream.
Lisal emailed our crisis email several times over the following two weeks. Our crisis email advocate Kate was able to provide Lisal with on-going emotional support, inform her of the options available in Sri Lanka for law enforcement response, medical response, legal options local resources and counseling.
Lisal wrote back to us. Here is part of her email: "Thank you for helping me in the worst moment of my life. I had no idea what to do. I never thought something like this could happen to me. My attacker has been caught. I was not his only victim..."
We truly appeciate your support of this project. Without you we would not be able to help victims like Lisal. Thank you!
