Malina contacted us after being sexually assaulted in Greece. She panicked and came home to the safety of the USA without making a police report of getting a rape kit.
Because Malina was still within the 72-96 hour window, we were able to immediately refer her to a rape crisis center in her city in the USA.
Malina was self-blaming and felt ashamed not only for the rape but for not taking action in Greece. We reassured her that fleeing home immediately after a sexual assault in a foreign country was very common. It's only natural to want to get to a place of safety where she spoke the language and could navigate a system she understood.
Her flight response was what her body and mind felt was what she needed to do at the time. We continue to provide emotional support to Malina and have connected her with a rape crisis counselor.
We also connected her to an English speaking attorney in Greece so she can understand what her legal options may be for both criminal and/or civil prosecution.
Because of your support, we were able to help Malina normalize her response to a sexual assault and mitigate the shame and self-blame she felt, get immediate resources and legal advice!
Thank you for believing in our mission!
