Hello from SITAWI!
We have been busy in Brazil with the Social Enterprise World Forum, which was organized by NESsT and brought together social enterprises (nonprofits and for-profits) from all over Brazil, Latin America and the rest of the world. It showcased social enterprises that are really changing Brazil, including organizations that connect handicraft workers with mainstream retail chains, deliver mail to favelas, run recycling programs in Amazonia or create fashion out of recycled materials. It also gave us lots of new projects that we hope to be able to fund soon. And of course, we’ll let you know once we do.
CIES, our current loan client, has also been successful and has sent its Health Wagon (Carreta de Saúde) to São José dos Campos in São Paulo state, where it has already provided quality healthcare to 16,600 people. The renovation of the vehicle was funded with a loan that included resources from our GlobalGiving campaign. In August, they set their Health Box to a women’s prison in São Paulo where they carried out 300 procedures, including mammograms, blood pressure and blood-sugar level tests, and other general procedures. The success of CIES means that they have also been able to raise funds to build a second Health Box, which will concentrate on men’s health throughout Brazil and was launched in October. Congratulations!
