Sloth Courier-Rehab Land, Rescues & Releases

GREAT NEWS, THE MOVE IS NOW MORE IMMINENT!

Although our project does not seem to have progressed much on Global Giving, we have made enormous progress with regard to our goal of setting up the sloth rehabilitation centre. This is the result of two things, one was reported on by Global Giving itself and was the nomination of Monique Pool, the founder of the Green Heritage Fund Suriname, as a CNN Heroes 2015 finalist. The other one has to do with a policy of the foundation to apply its ten-year savings to purchase land for the centre to be built on with a little help from our sister foundation in the Netherlands, which funded one-third of the total purchase amount of USD 35,000. Our initial ideas to built on land made available by our friends at METS NV was advised on negatively by our lawyer. This means that we expect to move the animals and our rehabilitation centre yet this year to Saramacca. We consider ourselves lucky to have such a beautiful forest location available with forest giants to heal the animals.

LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE RELEASE PROCESS

Last time we reported on the pre-release process of Ann, who was doing fine in our opinion. She stayed away for approximately 8 weeks, after which we decided to bring her back to the shelter prior to the actual release. However, from the behavior of the animal our impression is that she prefers to be in the shelter and no longer outside as much. Something we can imagine, as she no longer has to find her own food, and can just come and harass one of the volunteers who will then provide her with food. An seems to be happy with us for the moment, but our opinion is that she is better of in the forest. This is also why we need this forest habitat near our centre, so that going and coming to the shelter and the decision by the animal to stay away for increasingly long times will be easy for the animal to take without having to rely on transportation by humans. We will also work on release protocols according to the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council's standards.

RESCUES AND RELEASES

In the meantime the rescues and releases continued and since our last report we have rescued and released around 40 animals. One special rescue was an anteater who had been mistaken for an opossum and been beaten on the head with a beam. We could only release him if he would show vital signs. After we put him in an enclosure with a big termite's nest, we found out that he was well enough to be released. He had completely ripped the termite's nest apart, and had started digging himself out of the enclosure. As he was covered in dirt, upon his release he decided to go for a swim, before he found a tree to climb in (see link below).

GLOBAL GIVING'S MENTORING PROGRAM

As a result of our ranking on the Global Giving platform we were fortunate to be invited into Hewlett Packard's Enterprise (HPE) Micromentor Program and have been working diligently with our advisor on our strategic planning and goal-setting. This will help us in the future to save more animals, raise more awareness and ultimately achieve our goal of making this a better world for our wild friends in Suriname, but also beyond.
