1155 Fast Track Education for Afghan Women and Girls

Learning Centers frequently receive requests for sewing and tailoring classes. Women want to learn a skill that they can use to make money to help their families. A new center outside Herat, just opened. The village asked AIL to set up an LC in the village to help improve education levels of women and girls and support school children in certain subjects. There is also a need for sewing skills training and this will encourage women to take part in economic activity. Five sewing machines were bought for this new center as well as a sewing table. These classes will also teach human rights awareness, morals and social values, health and democracy. The center will also be a social entity and friendships gained there will help the women deal with problems in village or family life.

Another LC in Kabul received 4 sewing tables to update their equipment. AIL staff closely monitor LC needs and replaces old sewing machines that can no longer be repaired. Here are the comments of one student:“My name is Fatima and I am learning to sew. I attended another sewing course elsewhere but I had to pay fees which was too much for me. I did not learn to sew well at that place. Now after attending the AIL class I can make all kinds of clothes and it does not cost me anything.”

Thank you for your continued interest.

AIL is working towards: SDG Goal 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
